about

Andy Murray made sporting history on 7/7/13 by winning Wimbledon. I was incredibly lucky to be sitting on Centre Court that day, thanks to a wee ticket from Judy.

Earlier in the year, I wrote a song "Under the Lights (Song for Andy Murray)" It is essentially a folk song and attempted to sum up Andy's pre Wimbledon 2013 career in 4 verses and a chorus. Folk songs are really just songs about people that are passed down through history. Andy was creating history and I wanted to record that through song.
Myself, Andy and his brother Jamie are all roughly the same age. I was a junior tennis player and one of my first tournaments was at their club in Dunblane when I was about eight years old. We all grew up training and playing tennis together until our late teens. The Murray family have always been very kind to me. A song seemed a nice thing to do.

I was inspired by Bob Dylan, Warren Zevon and Mark Knopfler's songs about boxers, but mostly about Andy playing out his career under the spotlight of the media, winning his incredible maiden Grand Slam title under the lights of New York City at the U.S Open. In the folk tradition I pinched bits from all of their songs.
I was kindly invited down to perform the song by BBC Radio 5 live on the final day of Wimbledon.

In November, BBC Radio 5 live asked me to write four new verses about that day for a wee radio show. My instructions were:

1st verse: About travelling down to Wimbledon and the roar that greeted Andy when he arrived on court.

2nd verse: About Andy winning the first set of the final, but still having a long way to go.

3rd verse: About Andy coming out to serve to win Wimbledon.

4th verse: About Andy winning and the feel good factor of that day.

The end result is this song. I used the tune of another one of my songs called "Drink Up While You're Here" and adapted the chorus of my original song "Under The Lights"

Hope you enjoy, writing it brought back great memories of that day.
